Maths made fun: picture books developed in Uttar Pradesh
This quarter, in Uttar Pradesh, Vikramshila has developed five picture books which have been included in the NIPUN kit to support foundational numeracy. These books are grounded in real-life contexts and emphasize visual learning to help children connect classroom concepts with everyday experiences.
They cover key numeracy areas such as non-standard measurement, number sense up to 9, counting to 10, and operations up to 20. Designed to enhance numeracy vocabulary and mathematical communication, the storybooks also enable teachers to spark “math talk” in the classroom, as recommended in the National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage (NCF-FS). The exercise is part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s flagship initiative, NIPUN Bharat (formerly Mission Prerna), which aims to improve learning outcomes across 1.6 lakh government schools under the Basic Shiksha Department in all 75 districts.
