We aim to empower adolescent children attending vernacular-medium government schools, and those at risk of dropping out or are already out of the school education system by empowering them with 21st-century skills to enhance their employability. These skills include critical thinking, communication, digital literacy, creativity, adaptability, initiative, cultural awareness, leadership, media literacy, and lifelong learning.
Through targeted interventions, we seek to foster inclusive education, mitigate barriers, and provide avenues for skill-building, ensuring a brighter future for vulnerable adolescents by fostering their educational growth and creating pathways for socio economic advancement.
“By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship”
Empowering adolescents has always been on our agenda because they not only eventually become agents of change but also contribute towards the success of a nation.
We began with career guidance in 2008 with the government of West Bengal under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) to implement an innovative project called “Education to Employability”. The project was recognized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as one of the best practices adopted by the state government in the space of vocational education at the school level.
While working with the students, we realized that mere mapping of careers is not enough and the goal should be to equip students with skills to navigate the world around them. The program should be more holistic in its approach. This is when we decided to expand it to include soft skills training on.
We have provided our technical support at the state level and grassroot level, tailoring our programs as per the need.
In a bid to enhance the employability of children, starting at the school level, and to bridge this skill gap, our organization in collaboration with UNICEF India developed 500 career cards in English and Hindi. It also developed an online portal so that students can access the data online.
The cards provide 500 different career pathways to students with various levels of qualification.
We collaborated with UNICEF and the West Bengal Board of Madrasah Education (WBMME) and launched a piloT programme in 2019 to develop a curriculum for the adolescent students of Madrasahs. The programme was born in response to high absenteeism, poor learning outcomes and large-scale migration that was observed among marginalized communities. Following its success, a second curriculum was developed — his time for students of Classes 5 to 11.
According to a survey conducted by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Centre, only 24% of the Indian adult population is financially literate. Moreover, the financial literacy rate in the country is lowest in comparison to other major emerging economies.
Hence a Financial Literacy project, ‘Udita’ , was initiated by our organization in 2021 with the support of UNICEF. It aimed to equip adolescent girls with the necessary knowledge so that they
could make informed and responsible decisions regarding money.
Encompassing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, STEM fields play a critical role in shaping our world and driving progress across various domains. They pave the way for groundbreaking discoveries, inventions, and solutions to complex problems, driving progress in fields such as healthcare, energy, communication, and transportation.
Our STEM programmes include workshops, hands-on experiments, building scalable models and the development of a curriculum.
