Empowering adolescent girls: mentor training marks first step
Udita is a three-year, strength-based empowerment program designed to support 1,200 vulnerable adolescent girls in Khoyrasole block of Birbhum district, West Bengal. This quarter, a week-long orientation for five program mentors was held starting March 17th at the Kolkata office. The workshop introduced mentors to the program’s vision, goals, and milestones while creating space to reflect on their own worldviews and unpack concepts like empowerment and agency through a gender lens. These mentors will go on to create safe and meaningful learning spaces for adolescent girls—spaces where they can return to school, gain confidence, and lead healthier, more empowered lives.
Launched in partnership with APPI, the program targets girls who are out of school or at risk of dropping out, early marriage, child labour, or unsafe migration. The initiative aims to equip these girls with life skills, career guidance, financial literacy, and essential knowledge to make informed life decisions. By working closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), SHGs, and Women’s Federations, Udita builds a strong local support network to foster long term change across 60 underserved villages.
